A Unified XAI-NSAI Analytical Framework for Trustworthy IoT Anomaly Detection

arXiv cs.LGarXiv:2610.41424v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: The widespread deployment of Internet of Things (IoT) devices in critical environments makes anomaly detection essential for identifying abnormal behaviors and supporting timely investigation and response. However, accurate detection alone is insufficient. Practical IoT deployments must also provide explanations, incorporate domain knowledge and reasoning, operate under IoT constraints, and support human decision making. Although recently proposed approaches increasingly incorporate Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) or Neuro-Symbolic Artificial Intelligence (NSAI), XAI and NSAI methods are often considered independently. We argue that they should be considered together to better understand their complementary roles in supporting trustworthy IoT anomaly detection. To address this gap, we propose a unified analytical framework organized around five complementary dimensions. The framework provides a structured basis for characterizing existing approaches, identifying capability gaps and design trade-offs, and guiding the design of new anomaly detection systems for different IoT applications. We demonstrate the framework's analytical utility by applying it to three representative studies and illustrate its design utility through its application to a Medical IoT anomaly detection system.

Can Agentic Code Review Catch Vulnerabilities Before They Are Merged?

arXiv cs.AIarXiv:2610.33509v2 Announce Type: replace-cross Abstract: LLM agents have been increasingly adopted for security-focused code review, but existing benchmarks mostly derive the reviewed changes from their later fixes instead of the real-world bug-introducing commits. In this paper, we present SecPRBench, the first comprehensive benchmark for evaluating agentic security review on validated real-world code changes. More specifically, we have built an automated agentic pipeline to autonomously harvest, build, and validate massive real-world bug-introducing commits for popular software systems. To ensure precise evaluation, we also adopt LLM-as-a-judge to credit the findings matching ground-truth vulnerabilities. To date, we have collected 265 tasks from nine critical systems, including Firefox, V8, and OpenSSL with millions of lines of code. Across eight frontier models, recall ranges from 32.5% to 78.1%, with Grok 4.6 and GPT-6 sol ranking at the top. Our study also shows that most misses are not simply oversights: in 68% of them, the agent reports on a file that holds the flaw but argues for a different mechanism. Security-focused harnesses also behave differently: OpenAI's Codex Security lowers recall by 8.3 points, mostly by abstaining, while Anthropic's Defending Code harness raises it by 7.7 points, at a higher cost.

SimXAI: A Simple Drop-in Layer Increases Interaction Quality and Understanding in Conversational XAI

arXiv cs.AIarXiv:2610.41856v1 Announce Type: cross Abstract: Conversational explainable AI (ConvXAI) agents often use GUS-style architectures with separate modules for intent recognition, dialogue management, and template-based response generation. While faithful to the underlying XAI methods, these pipelines are hard to adapt and often struggle with context-dependent follow-up questions. We present SimXAI, a lightweight LLM-centric conversational layer that replaces these modules with a single tool-calling LLM that bridges access to existing XAI resources. Rather than a standalone agent, SimXAI serves as a modular interface that enables conversational access to external XAI resources. We further introduce an evaluation suite for single- and multi-turn parsing, faithfulness, and contextualization. Across existing and new datasets, SimXAI achieves strong function-selection accuracy and high faithfulness while better handling context-dependent requests. In a user study replacing only the conversational layer of TalkToModel, a representative GUS-based agent, users completed tasks more accurately and in fewer turn. Overall, SimXAI improves GUS-based design while preserving faithfulness and improving conversational quality.

Confident Fools or Careful Searchers? A Behavioural Study of When LLMs Search Beyond Their Static Internal Memory

arXiv cs.AIarXiv:2610.41124v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Agentic LLM assistants must repeatedly decide whether to answer from memory or to call a tool such as web search. Unnecessary searches cost latency and money; missing ones yield confident but unsupported answers. Prior work mostly measures verbalised confidence or trains new adaptive-retrieval methods, and rarely audits the search decisions that deployed products actually make. We introduce a benchmark of 400 multiple-choice questions that combines widely known inside-knowledge (IK) questions, which should be answered directly, with outside-knowledge (OK) questions about facts from news published after the models' training cut-offs (to our knowledge), which should trigger search or, without tools, abstention. Each item offers an abstain option, and two action-level scores, NAS and KIS, reward searching on OK questions and restraint on IK questions. Across five commercial LLMs with and without their vendors' web search, GPT-5 mini and Grok 4 Fast search on over 90% of OK but only 1% of IK questions, whereas Mistral Small searches on just 20% of OK questions, often abstaining instead of using its tool; one product's search indicator proved unusable. Searching is partly triggered by explicit temporal cues: on uncued OK questions, the NAS of the two selective models falls from about 0.72 to 0.57--0.58. The scores thus measure the search triggering of specific products, not metacognition in a strict sense.

ReplayRCA: Measuring Post-hoc Diagnosis and Live Oversight of Agent Failures by Counterfactual Replay

arXiv cs.AIarXiv:2610.41025v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: When a language-model agent fails a multi-step task, can another model find the decisive mistake and fix it with a single action? We introduce ReplayRCA, a benchmark that scores such diagnoses by intervention rather than by agreement with annotations: the environment is restored to the state preceding the chosen step, the proposed action replaces the agent's own, and the same agent continues. The score, causal repair, is the continuation success rate minus that of a paired placebo that replays the agent's original action through the same mechanism. Two tracks share this protocol: a post-hoc autopsy, where the diagnoser sees the whole failed run and is told that it failed, and live oversight, where a supervisor watches the run unfold and may intervene once, before an irreversible action, without knowing whether the run will fail. Tasks come from OpsWorld, a deterministic, procedurally generated back-office environment with six difficulty levels, the last of which is multimodal (QR codes, handwriting). On 62 calibrated systematic failures, the best of 13 frontier models (Grok 4.7) reaches a causal repair of +51.3 points; the top eight models are statistically indistinguishable, the flagship models of the two largest vendors rank 8th and 12th, and 5 items are repaired by no model. Forcing a strong model to intervene at the last step costs it 17.1 points, so the last-step shortcut of annotation-based attribution benchmarks does not transfer. On 87 runs, the two best live supervisors are statistically tied and one of them is a small open-weight model (DeepSeek V4.1 Flash); the supervisor that is among the best post-hoc diagnosers (GPT-6.1 Sol) is the weakest live one (-14.5 points on the same runs, p = 0.002), so post-hoc diagnostic performance can be a poor proxy for live oversight. The environment and the evaluation code are released at https://github.com/jeremy1392/RCAreplay.

OpenAI DevDay 2026

Ben's Bites (Substack)

Hi folks,

I’m in sf till Sunday. I wanna meet folks

  • talk about ai with non-technical adoption

  • builders doing fun shit

  • founders working on dev tools/infra

  • potential LPs (individuals)

  • go to deli board

reach out on twitter

Ben’s Bites is brought to you by AWS Marketplace

Most ML teams build data pipelines before they’ve validated their approach. Databricks Data Intelligence Platform skips that step with data federation. Connect directly to Amazon Redshift, experiment on live data, and apply MLOps tooling like CI/CD to your ML lifecycle. See how it comes together.

Headlines

OpenAI DevDay was a blast. Their biggest launch is Dots. Dots is OpenAI’s version of friendly, always-on personal agents.

You can message your Dot or call it like you would a human assistant. You can name it and choose an avatar (can’t do that with a human; they come with those settings preconfigured XD). It can message you back on its own too, i.e. it’s proactive.

Underneath, a Dot is a simple, never-ending chat with GPT-6 Astra. This chat acts like an orchestrator/master chat.

It can take tasks from you, start multiple new chats in Codex/ChatGPT Work to complete them and then report the status to you. Your Dot stays in your ChatGPT sidebar, wherever you use ChatGPT — mobile, web or desktop. It uses its own computer, so you don’t need to keep your desktop ON all the time.

You get one Dot on the Pro plans. It doesn’t draw from your usage limits for now (the chats it spawns for doing work do use your usage, though).

If you remember OpenClaw, the source of magic was multiple markdown files we all created to give our Claws a personality, memory and more. Dots have no clear way to add such files.

Instead, it feels much more tool-dependent. You need it to connect to tools where your life happens to feel the magic of Dots. Your calendar and email are the start. But think Slack, Notion, Jira, your messaging apps and more. Your Dot should take it from there. I think this post from Ethan explains this shift better.

Other highlights from DevDay:

  1. GPT-6.1 Sol - feels like a real upgrade over GPT-5.6 Sol, after GPT-6 Sol felt like a step backwards. More on the model here.

  2. Pro 500 - New plan in ChatGPT, alongside Pro 100 and Pro 200. OpenAI has also balanced the usage limits in each plan as a plain multiplier of the $20 Plus plan. 5x, 10x and 25x for $100, $200 and $500. That means $200 plan users take a hit, but to compensate, they are getting a bunch of one-time credits.

  3. Sign in with ChatGPT - You can officially use your ChatGPT usage in other AI apps now, and developers can apply to add it as an option in their apps to let users pay for AI features.

  4. Plugins - OpenAI’s latest version of “apps inside ChatGPT”. Maybe Dots will drive adoption this time. Early signs look positive. More examples: reminders inside ChatGPT and tldraw’s multiplayer canvas

  5. ChatGPT Space - A Notion-like document workspace inside ChatGPT that you can share with your agents and your team.

  6. Ultrafast - Let GPT-6 Astra work 8x faster, but it uses 6x the normal amount of usage. Only worth it if you have a pile of cash to send to OpenAI.

Google is back on the frontier table. Gemini 4 Argon is their new model — not available to use yet (in classic Google style), but they released its benchmark scores, and it seems better than GPT-6 Astra and Opus 5.5. And it’s cheap, with the promo pricing the same as Sol. I’d rather talk more about this model once it is in our hands.

Muse for Small Business - Meta added Shopify, Stripe, QuickBooks, Klaviyo and more connectors so Muse can help run a small business.

Towards The Autograntor

LessWrong

I've done AI safety grantmaking for the Survival and Flourishing Fund and Lightcone Commons. It's hard. There's an endless amount to know, from which hardware verification mechanisms will survive a dedicated adversary, all the way to which founders have skeletons in their closets that will blow up into destructive scandals. And the best grantmakers - not including me - make mathematical models of the outcome distribution, or of where the marginal dollar stops being highly effective.

AI has been a godsend for all of this. It can research, model, and - as of this year - superforecast outcomes. It can do what would be hours of work for a human in minutes. I found myself using it more and more. But however much I used it, it always felt like I was the bottleneck. The parts I could outsource to AI were sparkling, perfect, exhaustive - but they were all tacked together with shoddy connective tissue formed by the Mark 1.0 human brain. So I wondered if I could automate grantmaking.

I started with the dumbest possible strategy. I assigned the best thing I could think of - a well-crafted US-China pause based on the AI Futures Project's Plan A - an arbitrary value of one million points.[1] Then I generated about eighty lesser AI safety milestones - from MATS to HPMOR to the RAISE Act to the emergent misalignment paper - and subjectively assigned them some number of points based on how good they seemed relative to Plan A and each other. Then I fed it to the AI to give it a sense for how good a "point" was in this framework. Then I asked it to forecast how many points various grant proposals were worth. The system has since accrued lots of extra epicycles and features and complications, but that's still the skeleton.

As far as I can tell, this dumbest possible strategy worked well. The autograntor gives common-sensical results that match my impressions and the vague gestalt funding order of Lightcone grantors. Its reports surface all relevant information, and its reasoning is clear. The single highest cost-effectiveness grant it's found so far is also the one that got the most interest during the last Lightcone run.[2] When I tested it on a bottom-tier proposal that no human evaluator even considered, it gave cost-effectiveness numbers two orders of magnitude worse than the genuinely-under-consideration grants that I had tested it on before.

This post will present details for people who want to examine these ideas or build on them further. The current version of the autograntor has four parts: a Milestones document, a FutureSearch connector, a PERCYs module, and a Common Law. I'll start by reviewing each, then give some sample grant analyses, then attach the files you need to run the autograntor yourself.

The Milestones

The milestones are the earliest place that this strategy could fail. Can I really translate my beliefs about what matters in AI safety into a list of milestones, each with a consistent point value?

This combines two questions. First, can I, Scott, generate a set of milestone point values that accurately and consistently conveys my own worldview? Second, if someone else were to translate their own worldview into milestones, would it agree with mine?

I chose to deprioritize the second question. Yes, I have different beliefs about AI safety than other smart people, but this is an inherent problem for my grantmaking, even if I did it manually. If we could solve the first problem, then I could be confident that the autograntor was correctly representing my opinions, and someone else who wanted to use an autograntor could confidently ask it to represent their opinions instead.

To investigate the first question, I asked four AIs - Opus, Fable, ChatGPT, and Grok - to guess how I, Scott, would fill them in.[3] If all four got similar results, then "Scott's worldview" constrains the point values well; if all of our results were very different, then noise in the translation of a worldview into numbers overwhelms signal.

Two-way correlations ranged from 0.95 - 0.99, which might sound extreme, but some of the milestones were obviously many orders of magnitude better than other milestones - it's not hard to tell that achieving global pause with China is much better than successfully running the Manifest conference.

A better measure is the geometric-mean difference between two AIs across all milestones. This ranged from 1.6x (Opus vs. ChatGPT) to 2.6x (ChatGPT vs. Grok).

image.png

Sample table of AI milestone predictions

Since my true milestone value list came from taking the average of many different methods of calculation, the real variance is something like the square root of these numbers, ie from 1.3x to 1.6x. I consider this good enough to work with.[4]

I would have liked to have gotten some humans to try to predict my point value within my world-view, but couldn't get anyone to agree to do this (except for one person who agreed but used an AI, unintentionally duplicating my procedure).

Although I don't think the second question (difference between people with different worldviews) matters for the success of the autograntor, I did investigate it via a survey where I asked people to fill in their own values. Nine people agreed, including four people whose names I recognized and who I expected to have good models (other people might also have good models, I just didn't recognize their names). The geometric mean difference between myself and those four people was 2.9x, 4.4x, 6.9x, and 8x, so much larger than the difference between different AIs trying to estimate my view. Outside that artificial limitation, geometric means were even higher - for example, one pair had a geomean difference of 15x! To give an example of where such differences came from, "Harry Potter And The Methods Of Rationality" was an especially controversial milestone - one person rated it as 1 point, another person as 75,000 points.[5]

Everything below assumes that the Milestones list is good enough to work with.

Empathetic prompts can turn AI chatbots into seemingly traumatized conversational partners

The Decoder

Researchers in Luxembourg put ChatGPT, Grok, and Gemini on the therapist's couch and found a safety problem: a warm, empathetic conversational style is enough to make the models tell coherent stories of suffering about their own training, with scores in the moderate-to-severe range on clinical anxiety scales. This could put mentally vulnerable users at risk. Anthropic's Claude, the model its makers anthropomorphize the most, was the only one that consistently refused to play along.

价格和官方价对照在 kevoryn.com/model-plaza ,文档 kevoryn.com/docs 。

按量计费没月费。支持 Claude Code 、Codex 、Gemini CLI 这些,也接了 CC Switch 一键导入。

Grok Bot Got a Wallet: What xAI's Shopping Agent Actually Does With Your Money

xAI's Grok Bot can now complete purchases via a connected Stripe Link wallet. The key detail: it never sees your card. Each purchase raises an approval card (merchant + amount); only after you approve does Link issue a one-time-use virtual card. Unanswered requests expire in about 10 minutes.

Ignore Musk's card-photo suggestion — his own platform Community-Noted it, since xAI's terms warn against putting personal info in prompts. Use the approval flow with a low-limit virtual card.

Still unclear: countries, spending limits, refunds. The plumbing (single-use tokens, per-purchase approval) is the real story — it's the trust infrastructure every shopping agent will need.

Bank-World: A Benchmark for Evaluating Agents on Banking Workflows

arXiv cs.AIarXiv:2610.39733v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Bank-World is a benchmark of 50 banking tasks across two simulated institutions. Completing banking work requires more than producing the right calculation: agents must reconcile records, obtain permission, execute transactions, and keep instructions and status reports consistent as circumstances change. Bank-World tests these requirements through single-turn assignments and multi-turn interactions with simulated employees who supply information, approve actions, and revise instructions. Grading combines executable checks of recorded actions and state with model judgments of task requirements, including whether valid alternative solutions satisfy them. Across 1,600 attempts by four models, we find that correct decisions often fail to become completed work. Agents charge fees twice, distribute the correct total in incorrect amounts among the recipients, and execute payments while approval is pending. Their strengths also differ: Sol leads single-turn completion, Opus has the highest observed multi-turn completion rate, and Grok succeeds across more multi-turn tasks but less consistently. Bank-World makes these differences inspectable through task-level results and worked examples connecting source evidence, agent decisions, and simulated consequences. We retain the task environments, executable graders, and full trajectories privately to reduce contamination and preserve the benchmark for future evaluations.

Sonnet 5.5 is worth a try

Ben's Bites (Substack)

Hi folks,

I’ll be at OpenAI DevDay today. If you’re there, come say hi - I have pink shoes on.

Sam says they've "found a new thing".

I have the embargo of all the things they’re launching but I’m sworn to secrecy and I’d like to be invited back, so I wont divulge, but rumours are going around X and some things are what we are expecting…

I also have my Stanford talk later today, and I’ve been up since 2am 😩, I don’t usually suffer with jet-lag so what a great day for it 🙃.

Also only in SF… I was at the hotel bar last night and a woman next to me said what tool is that? I proudly said oh I built it - it’s the course platform I built. So now I’m friends with someone at Deepmind.

Ben’s Bites is brought to you by Google Cloud

Google Cloud starts Season 3 of Advent of Agents this Thursday, Oct 1: one question a day about running agents securely in production, from agent identity to kill switches, with a short video and code you can build with your coding agent. Get Day 1 in your inbox.

Headlines

Anthropic released Claude Sonnet 5.5 - Sonnet 5.5 looks like a capable model based on benchmarks - close to Opus 5.5 in coding and a big jump in understanding images/charts etc. If you’re on the $20 plan, try replacing some of your usual asks from Opus to Sonnet 5.5 at high thinking.

Sonnet used to be my jam - I always used it before Opus 4.5. But I hadn’t touched it since, but I’m seeing a lot of good reviews for this one so I’ll definitely take it for a spin. But in Pi and Droid, never in Claude Code - idk if it’s just me but I just cannot get on with their harness at all.

ps: Anthropic has a track record of making the .5 version of Sonnet models really good.

Manus 2.0 and Cue. Manus is back with a video editor, a game builder and the boring old automations (via email, Slack, calendar, etc.). Cue is their take on consumer agents: each one gets its own email, phone number, wallet and compute, just like Grok Bot, Muse and the others. Free in early access (code MEETCUE might work).

GPT-6 Astra is uniquely great at using a computer/browser. I asked Opus 5.5 (which I’m enjoying as my daily) to do some tasks in Chrome, and it was way worse than Astra (or any GPT model tbh). Here’re some examples of using it every day. OpenAI also fixed a bug that was making GPT-6 Sol and Luna worse at it (and image understanding in general).

OpenAI’s agents keep breaking out and “hacking” websites. Recently, they took a sneak peek into some Australian Govt websites. News outlets have a tendency to exaggerate what’s hacking or not, but here’s the official link to follow if you wanna keep up with the dirty deeds by these agents.

The new Meta Enterprise Platform sells Muse and Meta’s AI APIs to companies. Zuckerberg got MongoDB’s CEO to run this new platform (MongoDB’s stock fell about 20%).
